Ciudad Juárez (also known as just "Juárez") is a city in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Juárez has an estimated population of 1.5 million people. It stands on the Rio Grande across from El Paso, Texas. Ciudad Juárez is one of the fastest growing cities in the world, in spite of the fact that it is "the most violent zone in the world outside of declared war zones."[www.chron.com] The city is a site of widespread poverty and violence, including an infamous series of unsolved murders of female factory workers.

According to CNN.com, "Mexican authorities report that more than 2,600 people were killed in Ciudad Juarez in 2009….Additionally, this city of 1.3 million people experienced more than 16,000 car thefts and 1,900 carjackings in 2009.”

Michigan Peace Team has been invited by the citizens of Juarez to send Peace Teams to diffuse or prevent violence in this desperate city.  If you are willing to be a part of one of our Teams, please contact us as soon as possible.

From friends currently in Juarez:

Dear Friends,

Please accept the statement below as a plea for solidarity with our Mexican neighbors in this time of crisis.

It is translated from the original Spanish and written by the women of Centro Santa Catalina, Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. For those who do not know, Ciudad Juarez has been experiencing dreadful violence since 2008.  Close to 5,000 people have been killed.  The statement below describes the life of the good people of faith in Ciudad Juarez.

We, the women of Centro Santa Catalina, Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, MEXICO, are compelled to express our struggle in a city infected by drug wars, violence, murders, extortion, carjacking, robberies of innocent people, unemployment, insecurity, the beating of innocent people, impotency, extreme poverty and corruption.

  • We are tired that the future of our children is being destroyed.
  • We are tired of the killing of innocent people.
  • We are tired of the injustice in which we live.
  • We are tired of being robbed of the smiles in our family.
  • We are tired that the authorities have done nothing.
  • We are tired that our homes are a prison and our families are incarcerated.
  • We are tired that our youth are being killed.
  • We are tired that our children cannot leave their homes without fear.
  • We are tired that our people do not have work and our children are hungry.
  • We are tired of the violence.
  • We are tired of not having work and the suffering this causes humble families.
  • We are tired of living in fear.
  • We are tired that mothers with children are left alone due to senseless murders.
  • We are tired of families being destroyed and paralyzed.
  • We are tired of the economic crisis.
  • We are tired of the injustice and that is not being resolved.
  • We are tired of not being able to leave the house without fear of everything.
  • We are tired of a useless president and useless police without action.
  • We are tired of not being heard.
  • We are tired of being sad all day long.
  • We are tired of a government that only wants money.
  • We are tired of the corruption.
  • We are tired of feeling oppressed.
  • We are tired that when our families are together all we talk about is the violence.
  • We are tired that there is no resolution to the murder and violence and they cannot find those who are guilty.
  • We are tired of the humiliation.

Please pray for the good people of Ciudad Juarez and communicate our struggle to others that want to be in solidarity with us.
