Remembering Rachel Corrie

Michigan Peace Team is co-sponsoring three events with the national organization End the Occupation on March 14, 15, and 16.

On Tuesday, March 14th at 7:30 p.m. at the UU Church in East Lansing (855 Grove St), Noura Erakat, National Grassroots Organizer and Legal Advocate for End the Occupation, to explain what the recent election of Hamas to the Palestinian Authority is indicative of, what we can expect, and where to go from here. Noura's bio is below.

On Wednesday, March 15th at 7pm at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, Barth Hall, Detroit, Noura will speak about the national campaign against Caterpillar, which makes bulldozers for Israel specifically to demolish homes. 4800 Woodward Ave (SE corner of Warren and Woodward between 7 and 9).

On Thursday, March 16th, the anniversary of Rachel Corrie's death, there will be a demonstration from 4-6pm outside of the Caterpillar headquarters in Novi, 24800 Novi Rd (between 10 and Grand River) Rachel was killed while protecting the house of a Palestinian pharmacist from an Israeli soldier using a Caterpillar bulldozer. Eyewitnesses said he could clearly see Rachel in her orange vest.

Noura Erakat is a Palestinian-American legal-activist. Per the Institute for Democratic Education and Culture, "As a Palestinian-American, Noura Erakat tells the story of the people and a land in compelling, personal, and informative ways - from first-hand experience. She has lived, worked, and studied in Israel-Palestine and has a keen understanding of the different issues underlying the conflict. Her ability to present the basics in a fair way to people who know little is astounding..Erakat is informed, but far from dry; persuasive, but fair; and passionate enough to make sure audiences have no choice but to be engaged." Ms. Erakat completed her legal education at UC Berkeley's Boalt
Hall School of Law, and studied at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. She also co-led Global Exchange's fact-finding delegation throughout the Occupied Territories and Israel proper.

The Israeli government demolishes homes, uproots crops, and confiscates land.

Since September 2000, 4,170 Palestinian homes were demolished or blown up by Israeli Defense Forces. 291 acres of land were confiscated. 34,606 olive & fruit trees were uprooted.
