NEWS ADVISORY FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 24, 2007 Media Contact: Chris Singer, Development & Public Relations Facilitator - Michigan Peace Team E-mail: michiganpeaceteam@comcast.net Phone: (517) 484-3178 - work; (517) 316-0392 - home Brenna Cussen, 28, a member of the Michigan Peace Team (MPT), was apprehended by the Israeli military, put in handcuffs, and detained behind the Separation Wall during a nonviolent demonstration in the West Bank town of Bil'in. The demonstration was in opposition to the Separation Wall and the Israeli Occupation of Palestinian land. As the nonviolent demonstration proceeded, about 15 Israeli soldiers came out from among trees, shooting rubber- coated steel bullets at the demonstrators. An Israeli demonstrator was hit with a rubber bullet as he was standing at the side of the road leading to the wall. He fell unconscious, and awoke in pain and shock. Two Palestinians from Bil'in were injured. One was arrested and beaten in the head by the soldiers, and held for two hours, even though he required urgent medical care. Another was shot with a teargas canister which burned through his clothes, broke the palm of his hand, and injured his chest. The canister was fired directly at the protester from short range. All three who were injured were taken to hospitals, treated, and released. Cussen was released by the Israeli military after nearly two hours. Cussen is a member of the MPT Long Term violence reduction team in the Occupied Palestinian territories.
