FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Michigan Peace Team (MPT) received the prestigious Certificate of Appreciation at the Second Bil’in International Conference on Popular Resistance held in the West Bank village of Bil'in, April 18-20, from the Palestinian National Authority, the government of the Palestinian people. The plaque, delivered May 10, 2007 to the MPT office, reads: “In recognition of your outstanding support and courageous solidarity with the Palestinian people, we hereby grant this plaque of appreciation to Michigan Peace Team,” over the name of President Mahmoud Abbas.  Four members of the MPT long-term team were on hand to receive the award at the formal ceremony of presentation.

“I've learned so much about hope and nonviolent resistance from the Palestinians, it’s humbling to be recognized for our efforts for the cause of justice,” said Sheri Wander, an MPT international team member.

About 400 Palestinians, Israelis and International peace activists participated in the International Conference on Popular Resistance. Speakers included Mairead Corrigan Maguire (North Ireland Nobel Peace Prize winner), Ilan Pappe (Israeli author and professor at Haifa University in Israel), Mustafa Barghouti (Palestinian Minister of Information), and French Parliamentarian Jean-Claude Lefort.

MPT calls for an end to violence by all parties in the conflict so that peace can take root.

MPT was founded in 1993. It provides trainings in active nonviolence designed for the specific needs of the participants, and deploys peace teams, both domestically and internationally, into places of conflict. MPT works with local peace action groups and gatherings, and educates the public to the vision and practice of active nonviolence. MPT has deployed peace teams into areas of violence around the world.
